garden girls

hey y’all!

hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. i celebrated by going to a movie (hangover, which was v. funny. oh, and bradley cooper wasn’t so painful to watch, either) in a cool, dark theater with my sweet, accommodating hubby. but for those of you who braved the extreme temperatures to see the fireworks, etc. … better you than me!

WHO can even junk in this heat?! not moi. i noticed there were only 14 yard sales (compared to 70-something on previous weekends) listed in the classifieds (okay, okay. i know i said i wasn’t gonna look, but i couldn’t help a little peek) for this weekend. doesn’t surprise me. even the most gung ho junker has to hang up her junking bonnet for a while when it gets this hot.

however, i did host a garden party a couple of days ago in honor of the july birthday FAGs , jannetta and bonnie. yes, it was hot as hell, but with the help of a patio table umbrella and a couple of oscillating fans, we managed to enjoy a relaxing and yummy brunch in my new garden area.

in an effort to duplicate a tea room atmosphere and menu, i served various flavored iced teas, chicken salad on a croissant, a baby spinach salad with fresh mushrooms, fresh-off-the-vine cherry tomatoes, black olives, and a banana nut muffin. for dessert, a yummmmmy fruit pizza.

my daughter tara volunteered her services as waitress (thanks again tara!) so that i could sit and relax with the girls. she wore one of my vintage aprons (actually she wore two because she couldn’t decide between them) and did an excellent job of pampering us.

it was a delicious brunch and a special time of making memories. i think the birthday girls had a good time and enjoyed their very own garden party brunch. happy birthday to my dear pals!

enjoy the pics. you can see that my garden is coming along. it’s a work in progress that will be years in the making. but i’m trying to enjoy the journey, despite the july texas heat.

love and hugs,
terry lee

estate sale fever

hey y’all!

please excuse my recent prolonged absence from the blogging world. the texas heat has all but suffocated any creativity or enthusiasm that i had for blogging. and it’s almost done the same for junking. lordy me, but it’s hot out there.

partner in crime and fellow FAG bonnie and i bravely (and stupidly) hit the pavement at the crack of 9:30 saturday morning. there were a few estate sales that i wanted to visit before the heat melted me into a puddle of pink sweat.

the first one we hit was the remains of a three-day sale. sad, v. sad. you junkers know what i mean. however, IF you should find something you like, it’s usually priced to GO because it’s the end of the sale. in this case, i did find a couple of things … a vintage piece of luggage which was marked $3, but everything was 1/2 off, so i got it for $1.50. i can dig it. also got an electric pencil sharpener (it worked, i plugged it in at the sale) for the same price.

the second sale was somewhat difficult for me since i knew the deceased and her children. in fact, i grew up right next door to this house. it was good to see the children (okay, they’re not children any longer … they’re MY age) but it was also sad because their mother passed away recently.

and that brings us to my subject title. am i the only one who feels sort of … well … out of sorts at an estate sale? i mean, even when i don’t know the people, which i usually don’t, it has a sadness and morbidity to it … almost like we’re vultures coming in to pick over the remains of the deceased person’s stuff.

honestly, walking through a stranger’s house, looking at their personal things, in their bedrooms, in their bathrooms, closets, kitchens, etc. … it’s v. disconcerting. or at least that’s how i feel.

now, having said all that, does my uncomfortableness keep me from going to these estate sales?! hell no. because i’m a treasure hunter looking for a bargain … just like the rest of you. but i will say this: when i’m at an estate sale, i do try to maintain a somber and respectful demeanor (don’t be so shocked. my mama taught me how to act like a lady) just in case any family members are in the house. after all, somebody they loved has died.

usually.

case in point. hubby and i went to an estate sale in round rock recently and as i was perusing the living room, i noticed this sweet little old lady sitting on a recliner, under a blanket. she was yapping on her cell phone and having a discussion with her daughter, who was running the sale.

after negotiating a price on something (i can’t say what it is because it’s an upcoming birthday gift for one of the FAGs) i was told that mama was moving in with daughter … and so they were selling off her stuff. yikes! can you imagine just having to sit there, while strangers roamed through your house, buying your junk?!

bonnie and i hit our third (and final) estate sale of the day at the veranda (an upscale retirement community comprised of duplex-type housing). we were greeted by a genteel lady who announced that “everything is half off” as soon as we walked in the door. she further explained, “except anything that has a red mark on the tag. if it has a red mark, then it’s priced as marked. NOT half off. or if it’s on that table (she pointed to said table), then it’s not half off.”

sheesh. don’tcha just love it when they have to EXPLAIN their pricing rules to you?!?! reminds me of steve martin in “the jerk” when he was a carny and had to tell the dupes (carnival goers) that they could win ANY prize in this case. but being honest to a fault, he added, “anything between here and here” (carefully pointing to one little section of a shelf, filled with sorry-ass prizes).

BUT. i digress. i did find an adorable pink vintage apron (like i needed another one!!). it was marked 25 cents. but behold! it was half off! can you say 12.5 cents?! also got a sweet pink rose tin with note cards for a few pennies and a roll of tulle (whoop!), a pfalsgraff bowl and sundry other trinkets. my total there: $2

after we left, bonnie said there was an old lady on the sofa who was crying. i am sooooo frickin’ glad i didn’t see her. would’ve felt horrible about buying her apron for 12 cents. sigh.

next time i junk, it’ll be in the fall … or somewhere up north where it’s slightly cooler and less humid than central texas. it’s been over 100 degrees for a week now. i’m taking craigslist off my favorites list and will NOT look at the classifieds until october. seriously, i mean it.

i just hope nobody dies until then. okay, that was a joke. haha

enjoy the pics. they’re estate sale goodies and some project re-dos i’ve been working on. inside.

love and hugs,
terry lee

chickie

hey y’all!

okay, so it’s taken me a while to get around to posting my recent treasure finds. but here we are.

it’s friday night and let me start with this: SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER!!!!! (okay, you have to imagine me playing an air guitar and screaming, ala alice cooper).

i know, i know. i’m not school nursing right now and my son matt is home-schooled … BUT, my hubby is still serving time in the public schools, and he is VERY happy to see this particular year END. WOOHOO!! i know it was a tough year, babe … but you made it! congrats on the taks scores, in spite of all the challenges! you’re the BEST 4th grade teacher ever!

alright, alright. enough hubby praises. on with the show. instead of blathering on and on, i’ll let my pics do the talking (i just want you to know how painful that is for me. not talking.).

but before we get to the pics …

last weekend i went solo to a few sales in the ‘hood. some a bust, some a blast. this weekend started TODAY with a couple of yard sales in belton … one of which was sue’s friend cindy’s. got some cute things there (thanks for the sweet deals cindy!), pics are below.

and one final note. i recently redid an old cedar chest. well, not sure how old it is, probably about 25 years, which really isn’t that old as far as the vintage world is concerned. but old enough. it was dark, very dark. and the seat was upholstered in colors and a pattern that didn’t suit me.

it sat on my patio for a couple of months before i finally started the project (THIS is why i could never have a booth … i can’t produce fast enough). and then it took me several days to complete the re-make. but i must admit, it looks pretty good. am v. pleased with the results. pics below.

okay, now i’m truly done talking. for now. hope y’all find just what you’re looking for this weekend.

love and hugs,
terry lee

love this little sign ... a gift from jannetta ... so sweet!

hey y’all!

rather quiet lately on the junking front. stayed home this past weekend to recover from trade days (see previous blog) and did nothing but rest and enjoy some time with my hubby. admittedly, i was sorely tempted to sneak out to a yard sale or two. i even checked craigslist and the local classifieds a couple of times (okay, maybe more like 6 or 8 times).

but alas and alack, i did NOT junk (a moment of silence).

we addicts (and you know who you are) have a difficult time saying no to a yard sale or estate sale or a good flea market. there’s always the possibility of missing that perfect treasure at a perfect price. a treasure AND a bargain?! v. damn difficult to pass up.

but i needed to rest last weekend. i needed to rest my body, my mind, my soul and of course, my wallet. and i’m glad i did. i rediscovered my patio and the gorgeous spring colors blooming all around me. i watched the birds eating from the new feeders i put out (funny how they fight each other for that birdseed … like it’s steak or something).

i even rediscovered some old junk (and not-so-old junk) that i’ve been meaning to repurpose, re-do, re-create into something lovely, charming and useful. with any luck. more on that in future blogs.

anyways, i took some pics for you … in an attempt to capture the colors and beauty of my potted flowers, newly blooming rose bushes (LOVE my roses!) and other plants around my patio and porch. i hope you enjoy them as much as i do … and that you’ll consider slowing down for just a while.

and smell. the. roses.

welcome to my garden

hey y’all,

lazy. i must be lazy. i thought it was the heat. even the humidity. possibly my blood pressure? my thyroid?? that’s always a likely culprit. OR … i could blame it on the cancer treatments (some might call that playing the “cancer card”).

but no, it’s laziness. i confess it to you, my dear readers. all 4 of you. i just can’t seem to get myself in gear lately. or perhaps i should say i’m stuck in one gear: neutral. or is that even a gear?

okay, enough whining! i just had my 3 month oncology checkup and all is well. yea! also, i’m about to reach another milestone in this journey of survival: at the end of may, it’ll be two years since my cancer diagnosis. YEA again! thanks to each one of you for your prayers, good thoughts, words of encouragment and support. i wouldn’t be here today without you and your faithfulness.

after every good 3 month checkup, it feels as if i’ve been given a gift. another three months! which isn’t a bad thing for someone who’s learning to live ONE DAY at a time. three months sounds like a LONG time to me.

speaking of living … and having faith in the future, this is the first time in over a decade that i’ve actually planted something. i call it a garden, but it’s just barely. a garden, that is.

if you’ve done your homework, you know that we recently filled in our backyard inground pool (if not, back up and read my blog about it). it was a nasty affair, the pool and filling it in, so it seemed apropos to use that area for The Garden.

at this point, it has a little straggly apple tree (shades of charlie brown’s cmas tree … but sweet and sentimental and represents the ONE life that ben and i are making together), 3 rose bushes (significant number, for the three children i bore … and bore … and bore), two crepe myrtles (one for me, one for my sweet hubby) and a GORGEOUS vintage arch/arbor thingy i found in lampasas a couple of weekends ago. what it represents i do not know. maybe the welcoming of family and friends into our life (garden). i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it at crazy nana’s.

lordy me. but this business of planting is a painful proposition. first there’s the shopping (which i do well, unless it’s walmart and/or a payday … arghh), then the lugging of the plants/trees/soil mix/tools/gloves/pots/watering can/plant food/rose food (see?! i told you i shop well!) TO the car, then OUT of the car, then TO the patio/backyard. already i’m pooped and ready for a nap.

THEN you have the actual PLANTING of the plants. gawd-help-us. now, being the OCD middle child that i am, i had all my ducks in a row, as it were. my plants and bushes were lined up on the patio, sorted by color and variety, alphabetized and ready to plant. okay, i’m kidding about the alphabetizing. but truly, i had a PLAN for my garden. okay, so it was only in my head, but it was there: this plant would go here, that plant would go there. so on and so forth. blah blah blah.

i knew that my dear sweet hubby wanted a couple of trees, which was great (because i wanted them too). but i thought we would choose them.

together.

one day, he came home dragging a big pot with a tall stick shooting out from it.

“what is that?” i asked.

“a TREE!” he replies, and continues to drag it through the house, out the back door, straight to the virgin garden area. he grabs the shovel and before i can even speak (and that’s pretty quick) he’s already shoved the shovel into the ground.

whaaa??? what about my plans? my layout for the garden?? is that where the tree is supposed to go?!?! he has absolutely NO concept of my master plan, nor does he seem to care. i quickly weigh my options. is it worth saying something? stopping him, mid-shovel? he was determined and intent on planting that sad little stick of an apple tree.

right there. in that spot.

in the end, i didn’t have it in me to argue. i’d work around that little tree. i took it as a sign that THIS little apple tree would be the beginning of our garden, and as corny and as cheesy as it sounds, it would be a new beginning … the first day of our future. and so i pulled the bag of miracle grow over to the hole and we planted that little tree together.

i hope it survives. we’re watering it, feeding it, loving it (and yes, i’m talking to it every day … i read somewhere that it’s good to talk to plants). maybe one day it’ll surprise us with grand-apples. haha

geez this is getting long. time to stop the insanity. my word count is already 729. i can’t help it. verbosity runs in my family. my mom could never tell the simplest of stories in under an hour. i guess it’s true the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. 🙂 more gardening stories to follow … for now, enjoy the pics. and remember, it’s still a WORK IN PROGRESS!

love and hugs to all,
terry lee

spring-break-2009

happy spring, y’all!

i don’t feel as inspired as i should feel, writing this blog. i guess i’ve got the blahs. which is insane because the bluebonnets are out and every weekend there are yard sales galore. two things i adore.

anyhow, enough about my blues. i have a plethora of pics to share. matt and i went to see my sister (and our family chihuahua domino!) in fort worth for spring break. she’s such a great hostess (my sister, not domino). took us out to dinner (on the border) then to garden ridge for a little browsing. next day we hit the museum of modern art.

we briefly considered driving over to dallas for the king tut exhibit. looked it up online and read about the wait, the crowds, the artifacts (y-a-w-n). NO sarcophagus. what the hell? we opted to stay in fort worth and quietly admire the modern art. more my kind of fun.

at the gift shop (of course we had to check it out!!) i found the most fantastic PINK “batter bowl”. what it has to do with modern art, i do not know. i’m sans art degree. but it called my name so i bought it. pics below.

on the way home, matt and i detoured to downtown hillsboro for a stretch break. okay, and a little shopping. i found a sweet pink CLUB skillet w/lid, an adorable little lady figurine and some pink lacy doilies. lovely.

while we were in fort worth, living the good life, my poor hubby was home with strep throat. i didn’t leave him knowing that … he went to the doc while we were gone. he seems to have survived the bacteria with the help of some penicillin. bless his heart.

am also including pics of my treasure finds at the GW barn this morning. not much, but fun nevertheless.

i managed some painting this week … mostly old things i’ve had for a long time and have been collecting dust. they needed a good dusting of pink spray paint. 🙂

if you’re reading this in texas, get your arse out of the house and GO SEE THE BLUEBONNETS!! they’re beautiful. we saw lots between killeen and fort worth, but i still plan to make my annual bluebonnet trek out to the gorgeous hill country where the bluebonnets are at their best.

if you’re not reading this in texas, stay tuned. i’ll be posting my bluebonnet pics in the future.

okay, enough of my gobshite (can you tell i’ve been reading british authors a lot lately?!). enjoy the show.

love and hugs,
terrylee

that's my baby at the end of this 'art' exhibit ... nothing but green cellophane-wrapped candies on the floor. art. modern, that is.

this was a lagniappe from my sister ... an old table she acquired while living in rochester, ny many years ago. it had dark legs with a marble top. yes, yes, i did. i painted it ALL pink. hubby says, 'even the marble top?!' yes, dear, even the marble top.

wake-me-up-in-october

hey sleepy heads!

rise and shine! no excuses about losing a silly ol’ hour of sleep!

okay, honestly. i’m not a “rise and shiner”. ask my hubby. it takes 2 cups of caffeine and about as many hours before i can even begin to function in the mornings. so you can pretty much imagine how i feel about “springing forward”.

UGH.

very damn confusing this morning too. usually my cell phone changes time automatically. it didn’t. someone (the clock fairy?!) changed a couple of the clocks in the house, but not all of them. so with my usual foggy-headedness in the mornings, i was completely clueless about what time it was when i woke up.

my computer clock said something different than the wall clock above it. arghh. what to do? check the internet of course! tap, tap, tap. a few keystrokes and i’m on the “us official time clock” website. what the hell? it gave me the message, “site too busy”. ha! good to know i’m not the only one …

even with losing an hour this weekend, i found the time to hit a few yard/garage/estate sales. went to two on friday with my son and several with the FAGs on saturday. i brought home quality over quantity … and didn’t $pend very much! always a good thing!

enjoy the pics. and i don’t know about y’all, but i’m taking a nap this afternoon.

love and hugs,
terrylee

also got this box of whatchacallits at the estate sale. see that pink ribbon? i was eyeing that and she said she'd sell me the whole box for $1.00. okaaaaaay. but i'm not really into fall/halloween-type deco. still, the box itself is wonderful and beautiful.
