garden girls

hey y’all!

hope everyone had a wonderful holiday. i celebrated by going to a movie (hangover, which was v. funny. oh, and bradley cooper wasn’t so painful to watch, either) in a cool, dark theater with my sweet, accommodating hubby. but for those of you who braved the extreme temperatures to see the fireworks, etc. … better you than me!

WHO can even junk in this heat?! not moi. i noticed there were only 14 yard sales (compared to 70-something on previous weekends) listed in the classifieds (okay, okay. i know i said i wasn’t gonna look, but i couldn’t help a little peek) for this weekend. doesn’t surprise me. even the most gung ho junker has to hang up her junking bonnet for a while when it gets this hot.

however, i did host a garden party a couple of days ago in honor of the july birthday FAGs , jannetta and bonnie. yes, it was hot as hell, but with the help of a patio table umbrella and a couple of oscillating fans, we managed to enjoy a relaxing and yummy brunch in my new garden area.

in an effort to duplicate a tea room atmosphere and menu, i served various flavored iced teas, chicken salad on a croissant, a baby spinach salad with fresh mushrooms, fresh-off-the-vine cherry tomatoes, black olives, and a banana nut muffin. for dessert, a yummmmmy fruit pizza.

my daughter tara volunteered her services as waitress (thanks again tara!) so that i could sit and relax with the girls. she wore one of my vintage aprons (actually she wore two because she couldn’t decide between them) and did an excellent job of pampering us.

it was a delicious brunch and a special time of making memories. i think the birthday girls had a good time and enjoyed their very own garden party brunch. happy birthday to my dear pals!

enjoy the pics. you can see that my garden is coming along. it’s a work in progress that will be years in the making. but i’m trying to enjoy the journey, despite the july texas heat.

love and hugs,
terry lee

trade days

hey y’all!

the FAGs have returned from fredericksburg’s trade days and i’m just guessing, but i bet frederick and his little burg will not soon forget the FAGs. when we hit a town, we HIT it HARD.

okay, sometimes harder than others. i’ll admit to some shananigans here and there across texas but i must say we (the FAGs) were rather docile this weekend. it might’ve been the rain on saturday. the cooler temps. the swampy, muddy muckiness that we had to traipse through to get to the vendors/barns. i don’t know. but in that true FAG spirit, we persevered. can’t keep US away from The Junk Hunt … nor rain or sleet or snow, blahblahdiddyblah blah.

it seems The Head FAG (moi) was the only one wearing sensible footwear (my skechers running shoes … not that i EVER run … with lots of arch and heel support) for that kind of slogging and slopping about.

FAG #2 (let’s call her Bonnie for laughs) wore FLIP FLOPS. cute. v. v. cute. pink, even!! and cute pink toenails to match!! on ANY other day, she would’ve been stylin’. well, she was stylin’ … but after smushing her way through the mucky field of ankle-deep muck, she wasn’t feeling so stylish after all. bless her heart.

FAG #3 (jannetta, by default) wore her funky (but stylish!) TOE sock shoe thingies. i don’t know what they’re called. but they’re not toe socks. they actually have a rubber sole on them. they just look like toe socks. she was pretty mucked up too, as it happens.

now, having said all that, we didn’t let footwear (or lack thereof) nor the rain, nor the v. cool, breezy weather keep us from FAGGing away at trade days.

the vendors were marking things down because of the rain. “rainy day specials!” some of them called it. i’d never been to trade days or anything like it and i was, well, slightly overwhelmed and overstimulated. 6 barns full of junk. acres more of outside vendors (they were rained out on saturday but up and running on sunday). oh my!

by mid-afternoon, my poor old bones (and muscles and joints and every other fiber in my tired old body) were creaking, aching, throbbing, SCREAMING at me and i had to raise the white flag. sorry FAGs. yes, i was the party pooper. ME.

we checked into our hotel and i rested while the others went on their merry way. good! y’all go on, little FAGs and have fun. after a hot shower and popping a pain pill, i crawled into bed and tried to sleep. TRIED being the operative word. seems as if we had some sort of motorcycle gang-like people next door and they were on the noisy side. arghh. do i complain NOW, or LATER?

please don’t misconstrue. i am NOT anti-motorcycle gangs. honestly. i don’t personally own a hog, or whatever the hell it is they call them, nor do i especially enjoy the *noise* that they make, or the black leather and chains and studs and bandanas that the riders wear, god bless them. it’s just not my cup of tea. however, i DO take issue with noisy people at hotels. even if they’re driving a mini-van … heck, especially if they’re driving a mini-van.

thankfully, as it happens, the motorcycle “gang” quieted down and we didn’t hear or see them until we left our room to check out. they were hanging out next to their cycles, preparing themselves (bandanas? check! mirror-reflective sunglasses? check! ciggies? check! tight-jeaned b!tch? check!) for the day’s adventure.

bonnie and i edged quietly past them, heads down, trying not to stare, while loading up the camry. when we got in the car, we felt safe enough to take a closer look at them. sheesh! they were about our age (grownup hippies) and were very subdued and civilized with their bottles of evian water (which they probably used to chase down their morning blood pressure pill and anti-depressant).

no WONDER they were so quiet last night! they were SLEEPING! so much for my “motorcycle gang” story having an exciting ending … haha.

it was a fun weekend, as it always is when FAGGing. even if we didn’t land in jail (haha) or have a tumble with a gang of hog-riders, we did get lots of treasures … some to take home in my camry, some to store in our hearts forever. wouldn’t trade THAT for anything.

enjoy the pics.

love and hugs,
terry lee

spring-break-2009

happy spring, y’all!

i don’t feel as inspired as i should feel, writing this blog. i guess i’ve got the blahs. which is insane because the bluebonnets are out and every weekend there are yard sales galore. two things i adore.

anyhow, enough about my blues. i have a plethora of pics to share. matt and i went to see my sister (and our family chihuahua domino!) in fort worth for spring break. she’s such a great hostess (my sister, not domino). took us out to dinner (on the border) then to garden ridge for a little browsing. next day we hit the museum of modern art.

we briefly considered driving over to dallas for the king tut exhibit. looked it up online and read about the wait, the crowds, the artifacts (y-a-w-n). NO sarcophagus. what the hell? we opted to stay in fort worth and quietly admire the modern art. more my kind of fun.

at the gift shop (of course we had to check it out!!) i found the most fantastic PINK “batter bowl”. what it has to do with modern art, i do not know. i’m sans art degree. but it called my name so i bought it. pics below.

on the way home, matt and i detoured to downtown hillsboro for a stretch break. okay, and a little shopping. i found a sweet pink CLUB skillet w/lid, an adorable little lady figurine and some pink lacy doilies. lovely.

while we were in fort worth, living the good life, my poor hubby was home with strep throat. i didn’t leave him knowing that … he went to the doc while we were gone. he seems to have survived the bacteria with the help of some penicillin. bless his heart.

am also including pics of my treasure finds at the GW barn this morning. not much, but fun nevertheless.

i managed some painting this week … mostly old things i’ve had for a long time and have been collecting dust. they needed a good dusting of pink spray paint. ๐Ÿ™‚

if you’re reading this in texas, get your arse out of the house and GO SEE THE BLUEBONNETS!! they’re beautiful. we saw lots between killeen and fort worth, but i still plan to make my annual bluebonnet trek out to the gorgeous hill country where the bluebonnets are at their best.

if you’re not reading this in texas, stay tuned. i’ll be posting my bluebonnet pics in the future.

okay, enough of my gobshite (can you tell i’ve been reading british authors a lot lately?!). enjoy the show.

love and hugs,
terrylee

my-first-cmas

happy new year y’all!

i don’t know how y’all do it … blogging during the holidays. i had to completely give mine up. mind you, i kept READING others’, but that’s a helluva lot different than writing your own. and posting the pics, etc. i love doing it, but it’s mighty time-consuming. so my vintage estate-sale hat is OFF to youse guys. ๐Ÿ™‚

for some strange, gawd-awful reason, the christmas song, “we need a little christmas” keeps buzzing through my brain. and i didn’t even watch “mame” this season. nor do i recall ever hearing it on the radio during the holidays.

it might have something to do with the song’s sentiment, more than actually WANTING christmas to last longer. or come back soon. i mean, there’s NO ONE in texas who’s happier to see the holidays go bye-bye than moi.

ANYways, so many things i want to write about. so many pics i want to post! where do i begin?! bigger question: where do i END?!

firstly, i recently found a box of OLD black and white original prints that were from my parents’ house. thank the Lord my mama and daddy loved their camera and USED it. oh.my.gawd. what a wonderful gift they have passed down to us.

pics of me as a baby, my sister and me as little girls, lots of christmases past (talk about true vintage pics and 1960s aluminum cmas trees with pink ball ornaments … lord how i wish i had those treasures now!). i will post a few of the pics now and more in blogs to come.

speaking of the old pics, i made a scrapbook for my sister’s christmas present. she LOVED it. i made a slideshow of it for my own sake … but here’s the link to it, should you find yourself wanting a looksee.
Sister Scrapbook

secondly, hubby and i went to abilene this past weekend for our grandbaby’s first birthday. it was SO much fun spending time with him. he’s getting big fast. pics of him forthcoming as well.

thirdly, on the way home, we stopped in brownwood at one of my favorite antique haunts. it took some conniving on my part since hubby doesn’t like to stop while traveling … but stop we did.

found some super-dilly-icious, yummy retro/vintage treasures there including a little turquoise-cushioned stool thingy from the 50’s or 60s, a gorgeous crusty, rusty white plant holder piece with wheels, beee-autiful little plates/saucers/cups with roses, of course, an old PINK plastic canister set, a pink set of salt/pepper shakers, a great vintage pink AVON bottle … and a few other odds and ends (sorry, my adjectives are constipated this afternoon … the pics will serve as much better descriptions).

the more i think about it, the more i’m thinking that this business of junking/antiquing/finding that perfect vintage treasure is a little like christmas to me. it’s that FEELING of happiness (dare i say euphoria?!) i get when i step into a musty, dusty, crusty antique store and it’s like christmas morning, as a child, all over again.

yes! we DO need a little christmas, right this very minute!

we need a little christmas,
right this very minute …
for I’ve grown a little leaner (not!)
grown a little colder
grown a little sadder,
grown a little older
and I need a little angel
sitting on my shoulder
we need a little christmas now!

for we need a little music,
need a little laughter,
need a little singing
ringing through the rafter
and we need a little snappy,
happy ever after
we need a little christmas now!

lotsa love and hugs to y’all,
terry lee

Hey again!

With my youngest’s birthday fast approaching (he’ll be 15 next week!), my thoughts have turned to what matters most in life … family, friends, health and happiness. So with that in mind, I made a little slideshow to share with you.

Hope you enjoy.

Hey again!

I know it’s hot as hades right now (at least it is in the armpit … I mean … HEART of Texas). Who wants to think about snuggling up with a cozy afghan next to the fireplace?

With my hot flashes, not me. But I’ve been wanting to share this special treasure with y’all since I started this blog. I’ve had so much else going on (what with husband-bashing and all) that this is the first chance I’ve had.

Back in February, I believe (memory’s a bitch since chemo and anesthesia!), I was visting my sister in Fort Worth (hi Belinda!). She took me to an AWESOME antique mall with a very quaint little tea room called The Secret Garden.

After having our own little “sister tea party” of quiche and fruit and tiny muffins (and of course, tea!), we started browsing the aisles and aisles (and aisles!) of treasures. Oh my. I was in heaven. Too bad I didn’t take any pictures that day … sorry.

However, I did find the most gorgeous afghan in the world. The WHOLE wide world. I was walking by this booth, and something pink caught my eye (as always). It was tucked waaaay under something else and all I could manage to see was a single pink crocheted rose.

By this time, my spider senses were tingling. I gently (or maybe not-so-gently, now that I think about it) removed the crap on top of my buried treasure … and oh.my.gawd. There it was. The most beautiful creature I’d ever seen … other than my three children. ๐Ÿ™‚ I won’t even try to describe the afghan … because the pictures pretty much do it justice.

I knew it was mine before I ever saw the price tag. I was thrilled to discover it was only $25!!! But then something made the entire experience even better. My sister walked up and took it from me.

“Let me buy this as your birthday present.”

So, being the good little sister that I am, I let her. ๐Ÿ™‚ My birthday wasn’t until April, but I got to take it home with me and start enjoying it immediately. Thanks, Belinda!

Where did I put the lovely? I draped it over my bed’s headboard. And no, hubby didn’t like it. Kept bumping his pillows on it, which caused it to fall over on his head in the middle of the night. Did I mention that this afghan is unusually heavy? It is. So far, no concussions or asphyxiations.

I suppose I could go on and on (verbosity runs in my family … my mother’s side), but I’ll spare you anymore pain. Enjoy the pics!!!

To DIE for vintage crocheted afghan ... it has 70 pink roses on it. count 'em! my sister bought it for my birthday in april (but i picked it out!)
