estate sale fever

hey y’all!

please excuse my recent prolonged absence from the blogging world. the texas heat has all but suffocated any creativity or enthusiasm that i had for blogging. and it’s almost done the same for junking. lordy me, but it’s hot out there.

partner in crime and fellow FAG bonnie and i bravely (and stupidly) hit the pavement at the crack of 9:30 saturday morning. there were a few estate sales that i wanted to visit before the heat melted me into a puddle of pink sweat.

the first one we hit was the remains of a three-day sale. sad, v. sad. you junkers know what i mean. however, IF you should find something you like, it’s usually priced to GO because it’s the end of the sale. in this case, i did find a couple of things … a vintage piece of luggage which was marked $3, but everything was 1/2 off, so i got it for $1.50. i can dig it. also got an electric pencil sharpener (it worked, i plugged it in at the sale) for the same price.

the second sale was somewhat difficult for me since i knew the deceased and her children. in fact, i grew up right next door to this house. it was good to see the children (okay, they’re not children any longer … they’re MY age) but it was also sad because their mother passed away recently.

and that brings us to my subject title. am i the only one who feels sort of … well … out of sorts at an estate sale? i mean, even when i don’t know the people, which i usually don’t, it has a sadness and morbidity to it … almost like we’re vultures coming in to pick over the remains of the deceased person’s stuff.

honestly, walking through a stranger’s house, looking at their personal things, in their bedrooms, in their bathrooms, closets, kitchens, etc. … it’s v. disconcerting. or at least that’s how i feel.

now, having said all that, does my uncomfortableness keep me from going to these estate sales?! hell no. because i’m a treasure hunter looking for a bargain … just like the rest of you. but i will say this: when i’m at an estate sale, i do try to maintain a somber and respectful demeanor (don’t be so shocked. my mama taught me how to act like a lady) just in case any family members are in the house. after all, somebody they loved has died.

usually.

case in point. hubby and i went to an estate sale in round rock recently and as i was perusing the living room, i noticed this sweet little old lady sitting on a recliner, under a blanket. she was yapping on her cell phone and having a discussion with her daughter, who was running the sale.

after negotiating a price on something (i can’t say what it is because it’s an upcoming birthday gift for one of the FAGs) i was told that mama was moving in with daughter … and so they were selling off her stuff. yikes! can you imagine just having to sit there, while strangers roamed through your house, buying your junk?!

bonnie and i hit our third (and final) estate sale of the day at the veranda (an upscale retirement community comprised of duplex-type housing). we were greeted by a genteel lady who announced that “everything is half off” as soon as we walked in the door. she further explained, “except anything that has a red mark on the tag. if it has a red mark, then it’s priced as marked. NOT half off. or if it’s on that table (she pointed to said table), then it’s not half off.”

sheesh. don’tcha just love it when they have to EXPLAIN their pricing rules to you?!?! reminds me of steve martin in “the jerk” when he was a carny and had to tell the dupes (carnival goers) that they could win ANY prize in this case. but being honest to a fault, he added, “anything between here and here” (carefully pointing to one little section of a shelf, filled with sorry-ass prizes).

BUT. i digress. i did find an adorable pink vintage apron (like i needed another one!!). it was marked 25 cents. but behold! it was half off! can you say 12.5 cents?! also got a sweet pink rose tin with note cards for a few pennies and a roll of tulle (whoop!), a pfalsgraff bowl and sundry other trinkets. my total there: $2

after we left, bonnie said there was an old lady on the sofa who was crying. i am sooooo frickin’ glad i didn’t see her. would’ve felt horrible about buying her apron for 12 cents. sigh.

next time i junk, it’ll be in the fall … or somewhere up north where it’s slightly cooler and less humid than central texas. it’s been over 100 degrees for a week now. i’m taking craigslist off my favorites list and will NOT look at the classifieds until october. seriously, i mean it.

i just hope nobody dies until then. okay, that was a joke. haha

enjoy the pics. they’re estate sale goodies and some project re-dos i’ve been working on. inside.

love and hugs,
terry lee

hey y’all!

okay, so it’s taken me a while to get around to posting my recent treasure finds. but here we are.

it’s friday night and let me start with this: SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER!!!!! (okay, you have to imagine me playing an air guitar and screaming, ala alice cooper).

i know, i know. i’m not school nursing right now and my son matt is home-schooled … BUT, my hubby is still serving time in the public schools, and he is VERY happy to see this particular year END. WOOHOO!! i know it was a tough year, babe … but you made it! congrats on the taks scores, in spite of all the challenges! you’re the BEST 4th grade teacher ever!

alright, alright. enough hubby praises. on with the show. instead of blathering on and on, i’ll let my pics do the talking (i just want you to know how painful that is for me. not talking.).

but before we get to the pics …

last weekend i went solo to a few sales in the ‘hood. some a bust, some a blast. this weekend started TODAY with a couple of yard sales in belton … one of which was sue’s friend cindy’s. got some cute things there (thanks for the sweet deals cindy!), pics are below.

and one final note. i recently redid an old cedar chest. well, not sure how old it is, probably about 25 years, which really isn’t that old as far as the vintage world is concerned. but old enough. it was dark, very dark. and the seat was upholstered in colors and a pattern that didn’t suit me.

it sat on my patio for a couple of months before i finally started the project (THIS is why i could never have a booth … i can’t produce fast enough). and then it took me several days to complete the re-make. but i must admit, it looks pretty good. am v. pleased with the results. pics below.

okay, now i’m truly done talking. for now. hope y’all find just what you’re looking for this weekend.

love and hugs,
terry lee

Yikes! It’s already March?! Where has the time gone?

Well, in my defense (as IF anybody really cares and is waiting with baited breath for my next blog …), life’s been crazier than usual lately. But anymore that seems the norm.

I have oodles of pics I want to share. But before I do, here’s just a little glimpse into my life of leisure (haha) recently … sort of a reality blog, if you will. Not a gosh-darn thing to do with junking, antiquing, shabby chic, etc. So consider yourself forewarned and just skip down to the pictures if you must. 🙂

Last Tuesday my 15 year old son was in the bathroom, like, forever. I kept telling him to hurry up but there was no getting him out. Don’t ask and I won’t tell.

After about 2 hours (!!) he finally emerges and yells, “Mom! Something’s wrong in the bathroom!”

OH. MY. GAWD.

NOT something a mom wants to hear. Seems as if when he stood up, his legs were numb (uh, yeah, 2 hours of sitting on the toilet will do that to you) and he fell backward. 200 plus pounds of Solid Man crashed onto the tank and it shattered, causing a great and mighty flood in my bathroom. At least 2-3 inches of standing water.

After another couple of hours and using most of the towels in the house, he had sopped and mopped up the mess (under my supervision). Geez, what a nightmare.

As it happens, he had been playing his DS while pooping (sorry all ye faint of heart) … which explains a lot. No, he wasn’t injured, but his back was a little sore … probably from the mopping more so than the fall.

Hubby and I decided we’d have to call The Man. We’re just not the DIY types. But the only plumber we knew was good ol’ Al The Plumber (henceforth to be called ATP) … which was fine except the last time we used him he was more Pepé le Pew than plumber, if you know what I mean.

However, hubby and I convinced ourselves that it’s better the devil you know than the devil you don’t. I was under the strictest orders not to be alone with ATP (perhaps I’ll get sued for writing this but I refuse to change the name to protect the guilty).

ATP came the next afternoon and said we needed a new tank AND toilet. The whole shebang. Because I wanted to pick it out myself, he (ATP) went on his merry way and said he couldn’t come back till the NEXT day.

So Tara and I schlepped down to Lowe’s and Home Depot looking for the perfect potty. Sheesh! What a chore. Not NEAR as fun as junking. And they display those damn toilets so high, I wrenched my neck just trying to look at them. Arghh.

But now we are the proud owners of a new Jacuzzi brand (crazy! I didn’t know Jacuzzi made toilets!!) potty. Woohoo. It comes with a “5 out of 5 stars” flush rating. Whatever the hell THAT is. Can you imagine? They have flush ratings! AND it says you can flush a “basket of golf balls” down this baby!

Yeah, but can it stand up to my 15 year old’s “business”?! THAT is the question.

So ATP showed up the next morning to do whatever it is that plumbers do in the bathroom. Last time (several years ago) he asked me to sit on his lap while he decided what he was going to charge me (true, true story). Oddly enough, he didn’t ask me that this time. Ha! Guess I just don’t have it anymore.

But what I DO have are two functional bathrooms again. Thank you Lord, thank you Lowe’s, thank you ATP. And speaking of Lowe’s, Tara and I saw the funniest thing in their parking lot. Naturally, I had to take a pic. Words can’t describe it … but the picture says it all.

reminds me of how the cobbler's children never have shoes ... or something like that. poor mr. fixit.

reminds me of how the cobbler's children never have shoes ... or something like that. poor mr. fixit.

And that concludes the pre-blog program. On with the show … just some shots around my home; all things old and pink and turquoise and lace and ivory and pearly and … well, enjoy!

Love and hugs to all,
TerryLee

hokey-pokey

hey again,

i shall spare you all the gory details of my lengthy illness. not because i don’t wanna talk about it … what southern gal doesn’t? but because i have SOOO much else to write about and pics to show.

last weekend (see?? it’s taken me THIS long to get the pics uploaded and blog about them … due to my aforementioned lengthy illness) we went FAGGING in stephenville. woohoo!!!! it was a blast, as usual. and oh. my. gosh. did we find some treasures! there were several garage/yard sales, a flea market and, after a couple of failed attempts with jannetta’s new (and might i add, annoying) GPS gadget, we finally found the antique store we were hunting.

not much shaking there, although i did get one little beauty from the place (a sweet vintage lady figurine bust).

where we hit paydirt was at the garage sales and flea market. i found LOTS of vintage items, simply too numerous to mention. pics are below. linens, bowls, plates, cups, shutters (pink and greenish!), a PINK lady sunbeam shaver (w/plug cord and box!), old bottles and a rusty, crusty huge jar filled with matchbooks (?), a VERY old, rusted, crusted-over trash can, a PINK chenille spread (will have to be a cutter, very stained and well, stinky), a way cool book from 1945 titled, “alimony”, a pinkish/copper set of westbend salt and pepper shakers, a vintage pair of ladies’ eyeglasses and buttons and bling and an adorable blue birdie and, and, and … well, i got carried away. wasn’t gonna mention everything.

in case i forgot something, you’ll see it in the pics. the best part of this junking day (aside from being with my beloved FAGs) was that the place i scored the MOST treasures was the exact place i spent the LEAST. grand total of $6.50. toooooooo wonderful!!

grab some sonic ice to chomp (or your favorite snack), sit back and enjoy the show!

lotsa love and hugs … and thanks to all of you who keep praying for this tired old body o’ mine,

thankyouben

hey y’all!

am finally starting to feel like a human bean again. was yucky sick for over 2 weeks … but y’all don’t wanna hear about that.

missed out on a fantastic FAG trip this weekend. they went to fredricksburg for the trade days (sans their head FAG, moi). just wasn’t feeling up to that much shopping. my spirit was willing … flesh was weak.

however, i did make it out to belton for the city-wide garage sale. kinda crowdy, but worth it! SCORE!! a VERY sweet vintage white wicker sofa and rocker, an old screen door, painted pink and backed with an old white lacy tablecloth (adorable!!), a yum-yum-yummy vintage pink chenille bedspread (all from the same vendor … a kind and gentle couple from evant who gave me a steal-of-a-deal on the lot) … and four little vintage aprons, two pink/pink with roses and two turquoise lovelies from some dude with a middle-eastern accent. whatsup with that?! oh well, only in america.

quick “hubby” story before the pics. a couple of weekends ago, ben and i were on our way home from a restaurant. as we looped around a busy intersection, i noticed a box in the street. it was partially torn open and had what appeared to be plates falling out of it. naturally, i thought we’d turn around and check it out. naturally, i was wrong … because ben was driving. and he stops for nothing. not even for alleged roadside treasures.

was a little miffed, but also a little too sick to argue my case. got home, went to bed, forgot about it.

the next morning, my sweet hubby went to the pharmacy to get my medication. when he came home, he was lugging a heavy, torn-apart box and sporting a “look what i got, mommy!” expression on his face. he plopped it down on my dining table (yikes!) and immediately, i knew what it was … and what he’d done.

how SWEET is that?!! good job, benjamin! i love you for that. for endangering your life (!!) in that busy intersection to get those silly plates because it’d make me happy … for all the times you go out of your way to make me happy. you’re the best.

btw, the plates were obviously headed to the hotel/restaurant at that intersection. they were just plain, white, service-industry 5″ plates … 25 of them that weren’t broken. but i can use them for crafts. and if i can’t, i betcha i know who can (hi sue!).

okay, on to da pics! lots of ’em this time. and in order to expedite this process, not all of them will have captions. so i hope you did your homework and read every word of my blog. haha.

love and hugs to all,
terry lee
