hey again y’all,

hate to keep complaining (some of you who know me well, may beg to differ, haha), but this unseasonably warm and muggy weather lately is really putting a damper on my energy levels and enthusiasm to do ANYthing short of taking naps in my dark, air conditioned bedroom.

so last weekend one of my FAGs and i hit the road (the other one went awol on us … okay, she was doing something honorable and noble like walking to raise money for the hope pregnancy center … while the other two of us went schlepping across central texas in search of that PERFECT treasure at all the garage sales, estate sales, church rummage sales, etc.). very selfish, the two of us. out there chasing our dreams and scheming of future jaunts like next weekend’s fredericksburg’s trade days.

but what a BLAST we had. my poor camry hasn’t been that packed in a long time. reminds me of the good old days when FAGGing was in full gear. oh, if you don’t know what FAGGing is and if you’re curious, you can click The Journey is Everything to read all about it. it was our “outting” blog. haha

first stop was an estate sale. i cleaned out an entire bedroom. well, almost. it had the most beautiful PINK ROSE comforter set with matching curtains. for an extra little amount, she threw in the fantastic vintage window w/mirror that was hanging above the bed.

our second stop was a sweet little yard sale run by some v. nice ladies who actually allowed jannetta (the FAG in question) to use their restroom AND write a check for her goods. ohmy. AND their prices were like THE BEST you could hope for.

“oh, 25 cents for this. 10 cents for that.”

that kinda thing. you junkers know what music that is to your ears. i must say, i’d never ever let a yard sale customer use my bathroom. call me not nice, call me anything you want, but i just wouldn’t. nor would i accept a check from someone i didn’t know. very well. but these ladies were better women than i am and they restored (somewhat) some lost faith in womankind.

we hit lots more sales, including the salado flea market thingy where we actually saw belly dancers perform (whaa?!), a church rummage sale where nothing was priced … they only accepted donations at YOUR discretion (not my cup of meat, i prefer to be told what it costs … otherwise i feel guilty because i’m a neurotic middle child) and many other yard sales. we were soooooo hot and tired and sweaty by lunch time.

and speaking of LUNCH, we backtracked a bit in order to eat in salado. jannetta wanted me to try out a quaint little place called adelea’s (i thought it was pronounced “uh-deal-yuhs”. but NO. wrong again, princess smart-ass. you say it “add-uh-leez”. emPHAsis on the first syLLAble.)

her younger cousin michael is the chef there and so we made a big to-do about knowing the chef and asking for him. he recently graduated from a wonderful culinary school in austin. he was v. kind and gracious and even gave me a sample of his chicken and dumplings (my all time fave comfort food). i loved them, but it was so dang hot i just didn’t have the stomach to eat something warm.

but the deli sandwich was delish and the home made pecan pie with chocolate drizzled over it was TO. DIE. FOR. honestly. i thought i’d died and gone to pecan heaven. michael said they get their pecans from a local vendor in salado. locally grown, locally baked, locally eaten, by local FAGs. us. yum.

okay, i have digressed waaaaay more than usual. what i WANTED to write about was a sweet little girl named gracie. she was the daughter of the yard sale lady who had the great prices and let jannetta use her restroom. while i was perusing her mama’s merchandise, she decided to follow me from table to table. she’d hide under something, then spring up and surprise me with a “Boo!”

this went on the entire time we were there. what a darling. probably about 5 years old. not sure why she latched onto me … must be my pied piper charms. haha. when we were loading up the car, she walked over and handed me a little flower. okay, honestly, it was a weed. picked from her front yard. but to me it was the most beautiful flower in the world. after i thanked her demonstratively (my mama didn’t raise no ingrate), i asked what her name was. she said, “gracie.”

“well of course it is. what else would it be?” i said to her. and i meant it. her mom and aunt were v. gracious to us and little gracie was nothing but a sweetheart, providing me with joy and amusement during our entire visit. you can’t put a price on that.

lord almighty. my word count is now officially 860. sheesh. and i didn’t even get to HALF of what i wanted to share with you. maybe the pics will fill in some of the blanks. enjoy!

love and hugs to all,
terry lee

hey y’all!

hope this finds everyone all “loved up” after valentine’s day. don’t get me wrong, i believe in love and all, but something about v-day just seems so contrived, materialistic … it’s retail-craziness.

i was in wal-mart the other day (i know, it was against my better judgment … but i pre-medicated myself … thank god for valium and the like … haha!). anyway, i kept passing the dreaded “valentine aisle”. everytime i’d go by, i could feel my heart (the dreaded PVCs for you fellow medical-types) fluttering and my respiratory rate would increase (aka hyperventilation).

let’s be clear about this. it wasn’t because i was excited by the lovely walmart merchandise … it had something to do with the overwhelming commercialism of it all. and possibly all the other last minute shoppers crowding the aisle.

anyway, i managed ONE pass through the aisle. not that i was planning to buy much. i was (blatantly proud) MAKING valentines this year. but how the hell do you make chocolate?!

anyway, by the time i made it to the end of the aisle, i truly was hyperventilating and had broken out in a complete flop sweat. i was drenched. i think i had hives. so much for pre-medication. no amount of valium or ativan could touch my wal-mart-itis. none.

okay, i’ve digressed. here we go. i grabbed some bags of chocolate and made straight for the checkout. but before i did, a fellow disgruntled shopper made a comment to no one in particular. “this is all a bunch of sh*t.”

yikes! what a comment! but i couldn’t have agreed more. i was in a bit of a mood, so i replied, “i know. i agree. i just want to shove all this candy off the shelves and pull down that damn valentine sign.” (the one advertising LOVE/candy/valentine teddy bears and the like, hanging from the ceiling).

i think i scared her off.

but back to handmade valentines. that’s what i wanted to share with you. i did decide to make valentines this year. one for the love of my life, ben (dear, long-suffering, enduring husband o’ mine), one for my precious beautiful daughter tara, and then one for each of the beloved FAGs (if you don’t know who they are, then you haven’t been paying attention! see previous blogs).

i think they all turned out well. i’m not that crafty … i call myself a craft impersonator. but they all seemed to like them (or at least they had the good grace to pretend they did).

i’m also including some pics from a recent trip to burnet. was supposed to be a FAG trip, but only 2/3 of us were able to make it. but on we went. found some really terrific treasures. read captions for more info.

enjoy the show.

stay loved, stay well.

happy new year y’all!

i don’t know how y’all do it … blogging during the holidays. i had to completely give mine up. mind you, i kept READING others’, but that’s a helluva lot different than writing your own. and posting the pics, etc. i love doing it, but it’s mighty time-consuming. so my vintage estate-sale hat is OFF to youse guys. 🙂

for some strange, gawd-awful reason, the christmas song, “we need a little christmas” keeps buzzing through my brain. and i didn’t even watch “mame” this season. nor do i recall ever hearing it on the radio during the holidays.

it might have something to do with the song’s sentiment, more than actually WANTING christmas to last longer. or come back soon. i mean, there’s NO ONE in texas who’s happier to see the holidays go bye-bye than moi.

ANYways, so many things i want to write about. so many pics i want to post! where do i begin?! bigger question: where do i END?!

firstly, i recently found a box of OLD black and white original prints that were from my parents’ house. thank the Lord my mama and daddy loved their camera and USED it. oh.my.gawd. what a wonderful gift they have passed down to us.

pics of me as a baby, my sister and me as little girls, lots of christmases past (talk about true vintage pics and 1960s aluminum cmas trees with pink ball ornaments … lord how i wish i had those treasures now!). i will post a few of the pics now and more in blogs to come.

speaking of the old pics, i made a scrapbook for my sister’s christmas present. she LOVED it. i made a slideshow of it for my own sake … but here’s the link to it, should you find yourself wanting a looksee.
Sister Scrapbook

secondly, hubby and i went to abilene this past weekend for our grandbaby’s first birthday. it was SO much fun spending time with him. he’s getting big fast. pics of him forthcoming as well.

thirdly, on the way home, we stopped in brownwood at one of my favorite antique haunts. it took some conniving on my part since hubby doesn’t like to stop while traveling … but stop we did.

found some super-dilly-icious, yummy retro/vintage treasures there including a little turquoise-cushioned stool thingy from the 50’s or 60s, a gorgeous crusty, rusty white plant holder piece with wheels, beee-autiful little plates/saucers/cups with roses, of course, an old PINK plastic canister set, a pink set of salt/pepper shakers, a great vintage pink AVON bottle … and a few other odds and ends (sorry, my adjectives are constipated this afternoon … the pics will serve as much better descriptions).

the more i think about it, the more i’m thinking that this business of junking/antiquing/finding that perfect vintage treasure is a little like christmas to me. it’s that FEELING of happiness (dare i say euphoria?!) i get when i step into a musty, dusty, crusty antique store and it’s like christmas morning, as a child, all over again.

yes! we DO need a little christmas, right this very minute!

we need a little christmas,
right this very minute …
for I’ve grown a little leaner (not!)
grown a little colder
grown a little sadder,
grown a little older
and I need a little angel
sitting on my shoulder
we need a little christmas now!

for we need a little music,
need a little laughter,
need a little singing
ringing through the rafter
and we need a little snappy,
happy ever after
we need a little christmas now!

lotsa love and hugs to y’all,
terry lee
