welcome to my garden

hey y’all,

lazy. i must be lazy. i thought it was the heat. even the humidity. possibly my blood pressure? my thyroid?? that’s always a likely culprit. OR … i could blame it on the cancer treatments (some might call that playing the “cancer card”).

but no, it’s laziness. i confess it to you, my dear readers. all 4 of you. i just can’t seem to get myself in gear lately. or perhaps i should say i’m stuck in one gear: neutral. or is that even a gear?

okay, enough whining! i just had my 3 month oncology checkup and all is well. yea! also, i’m about to reach another milestone in this journey of survival: at the end of may, it’ll be two years since my cancer diagnosis. YEA again! thanks to each one of you for your prayers, good thoughts, words of encouragment and support. i wouldn’t be here today without you and your faithfulness.

after every good 3 month checkup, it feels as if i’ve been given a gift. another three months! which isn’t a bad thing for someone who’s learning to live ONE DAY at a time. three months sounds like a LONG time to me.

speaking of living … and having faith in the future, this is the first time in over a decade that i’ve actually planted something. i call it a garden, but it’s just barely. a garden, that is.

if you’ve done your homework, you know that we recently filled in our backyard inground pool (if not, back up and read my blog about it). it was a nasty affair, the pool and filling it in, so it seemed apropos to use that area for The Garden.

at this point, it has a little straggly apple tree (shades of charlie brown’s cmas tree … but sweet and sentimental and represents the ONE life that ben and i are making together), 3 rose bushes (significant number, for the three children i bore … and bore … and bore), two crepe myrtles (one for me, one for my sweet hubby) and a GORGEOUS vintage arch/arbor thingy i found in lampasas a couple of weekends ago. what it represents i do not know. maybe the welcoming of family and friends into our life (garden). i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it at crazy nana’s.

lordy me. but this business of planting is a painful proposition. first there’s the shopping (which i do well, unless it’s walmart and/or a payday … arghh), then the lugging of the plants/trees/soil mix/tools/gloves/pots/watering can/plant food/rose food (see?! i told you i shop well!) TO the car, then OUT of the car, then TO the patio/backyard. already i’m pooped and ready for a nap.

THEN you have the actual PLANTING of the plants. gawd-help-us. now, being the OCD middle child that i am, i had all my ducks in a row, as it were. my plants and bushes were lined up on the patio, sorted by color and variety, alphabetized and ready to plant. okay, i’m kidding about the alphabetizing. but truly, i had a PLAN for my garden. okay, so it was only in my head, but it was there: this plant would go here, that plant would go there. so on and so forth. blah blah blah.

i knew that my dear sweet hubby wanted a couple of trees, which was great (because i wanted them too). but i thought we would choose them.

together.

one day, he came home dragging a big pot with a tall stick shooting out from it.

“what is that?” i asked.

“a TREE!” he replies, and continues to drag it through the house, out the back door, straight to the virgin garden area. he grabs the shovel and before i can even speak (and that’s pretty quick) he’s already shoved the shovel into the ground.

whaaa??? what about my plans? my layout for the garden?? is that where the tree is supposed to go?!?! he has absolutely NO concept of my master plan, nor does he seem to care. i quickly weigh my options. is it worth saying something? stopping him, mid-shovel? he was determined and intent on planting that sad little stick of an apple tree.

right there. in that spot.

in the end, i didn’t have it in me to argue. i’d work around that little tree. i took it as a sign that THIS little apple tree would be the beginning of our garden, and as corny and as cheesy as it sounds, it would be a new beginning … the first day of our future. and so i pulled the bag of miracle grow over to the hole and we planted that little tree together.

i hope it survives. we’re watering it, feeding it, loving it (and yes, i’m talking to it every day … i read somewhere that it’s good to talk to plants). maybe one day it’ll surprise us with grand-apples. haha

geez this is getting long. time to stop the insanity. my word count is already 729. i can’t help it. verbosity runs in my family. my mom could never tell the simplest of stories in under an hour. i guess it’s true the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. 🙂 more gardening stories to follow … for now, enjoy the pics. and remember, it’s still a WORK IN PROGRESS!

love and hugs to all,
terry lee

hokey-pokey

hey again,

i shall spare you all the gory details of my lengthy illness. not because i don’t wanna talk about it … what southern gal doesn’t? but because i have SOOO much else to write about and pics to show.

last weekend (see?? it’s taken me THIS long to get the pics uploaded and blog about them … due to my aforementioned lengthy illness) we went FAGGING in stephenville. woohoo!!!! it was a blast, as usual. and oh. my. gosh. did we find some treasures! there were several garage/yard sales, a flea market and, after a couple of failed attempts with jannetta’s new (and might i add, annoying) GPS gadget, we finally found the antique store we were hunting.

not much shaking there, although i did get one little beauty from the place (a sweet vintage lady figurine bust).

where we hit paydirt was at the garage sales and flea market. i found LOTS of vintage items, simply too numerous to mention. pics are below. linens, bowls, plates, cups, shutters (pink and greenish!), a PINK lady sunbeam shaver (w/plug cord and box!), old bottles and a rusty, crusty huge jar filled with matchbooks (?), a VERY old, rusted, crusted-over trash can, a PINK chenille spread (will have to be a cutter, very stained and well, stinky), a way cool book from 1945 titled, “alimony”, a pinkish/copper set of westbend salt and pepper shakers, a vintage pair of ladies’ eyeglasses and buttons and bling and an adorable blue birdie and, and, and … well, i got carried away. wasn’t gonna mention everything.

in case i forgot something, you’ll see it in the pics. the best part of this junking day (aside from being with my beloved FAGs) was that the place i scored the MOST treasures was the exact place i spent the LEAST. grand total of $6.50. toooooooo wonderful!!

grab some sonic ice to chomp (or your favorite snack), sit back and enjoy the show!

lotsa love and hugs … and thanks to all of you who keep praying for this tired old body o’ mine,

terry lee

90-off

hey again!

trying to keep my blog afresh, ’cause i know people get tired of looking at the same old thing when/if they come to visit. you know how it is, house guests and fish and your blog … they all start to stink after 3 days. haha.

ANYways, went on a mini-FAG trip the other night. i LOVE those, btw. usually when we go FAGing, it’s an ordeal. in a good way. we load ourselves up in the FAGmobile and drive to some gawd-forsaken little texas hole in the wall … or maybe a not-so-little-hole. either way, we’re gone for the day and down for the count.

so earlier this week, we did a mini-FAG outing one evening. we had a very simple plan: big lots and then to el chico. or casa el chico as jannetta called it. she was just a little confused at which particular mexican restaurant we landed. had NOTHING to do with margaritas …

back to big lots. they had their christmas stuff marked 90% off. i was NOT in the mood to buy cmas decorations … i barely have everything cleared out of my house from the holidays. but when it hit me how MUCH 90% off really IS, well, i couldn’t resist. i mean, it was practically FREE. it would’ve been a SIN not to buy at those prices. a HUGE sin. and believe me, i know sin. i was raised on it.

so i found a buggy (shopping cart for you yankees) and started loading up. huge ornaments for 40 cents, packages of miniature ornaments for 20 cents, strands and strands and strands of gold beads for 20 cents. snowman boxes and tins … ohmygawd. i couldn’t stop. at 90% off … whatcha gonna do?!?!

okay, so my pics are below. also got a bag of lay’s bbq potato chips which is apropos to nothing. except they were on sale too. but not 90% off.

we did have a great time at casa el chico. haha. our server, cando (which being spanish-challenged, we thought was “can-do” … like he’s a “can-do!” sort of guy) was wonderful and spoke lovely spanish to us, though we didn’t understand a lick of it.

good friends, good food, good bargains, good times. good medicine for all of us, as always.

enjoy the pics. love and hugs to you all, mi amigas and amigos.

salado-chapel

hey y’all!

hope everyone had a wonderful thanksgiving! we were very blessed: all three of ben’s sons were here, including mike and his wife burgandi and their little one, harrison. he’s the first grandbaby! tara and matt (my two youngest blessings) were here as well as ben and me. an almost full nest of baby birds (no matter how old they get, they’re still our babies)!

ben and i have fallen completely and madly in love with grandbaby harry. we seriously considered hiding him from his mommy and daddy so they might leave him behind. but in the end, we thought better of it. would’ve been a tad extreme, don’t you think?

on friday, burgandi and i went shopping in salado and left grandpa and daddy behind to babysit harry. had lunch at a quaint little tea room (very girly!) and found great deals on some very sweet things … but most of all, it was some serious “girl time” with my daughter in law.

the house is mighty quiet today … just matt and me. feeling kinda blue and missing baby harry. i’ve written it before, but i can’t help but wonder what a mama bird feels, if anything, when all her birds fly out of the nest. the older i get, the more sentimental (and sometimes downright depressed) i get during the holidays. especially when i don’t see all of my children … or if i get to see them and then they leave again (as they should!). sigh.

okay. enough wallowing! am including pics of the family, especially the grandbaby … and a few from salado. i found two VERY sweet little birds who are now at home in my collection (pics of that too). what IS it with me and birds, anyhow?! it’s a sickness i’m afraid. they are just toooo sweet.

enjoy. and hang in there. this time next month, it’ll all be over … for another year. whew!

love and hugs,
terry lee

hey y’all!

my, how time flies! i didn’t realize it’d been so long since my last post!

you’d think that i’d have more time now that i’m staying home (home-schooling my youngest) … but noooooooo. not so. we stay very busy and we’re having a blast. it’s a great blessing for both of us.

anyways, here are a few pics of some recent treasure hunt finds and of my front room, which is now officially “paris-themed”. last weekend, i SCORED a vintage singer dressform at a yard sale. shall i tell you how much? okay. FOUR bucks!! she’s now in my paris room. love her. and need to name her. she’s my first.

another notable find … a big ol’ pink fru fru dress (bridesmaid?? prom dress??) at the harker heights goodwill bargain barn. ohmygawd. it caught my eye as soon as i walked in and it just wouldn’t stop yapping at me the entire time. “take me home! you need me! i’m PINK! just look at me! buy me!” i finally caved in and put her on the pile of junk i was buying just to shut her up. geez.

oh! and sue, i absolutely LOVED your visit! i never knew my garage could be so much fun! ha! sorry ’bout the stale sandwiches (and on PAPER plates to boot!). gawd, i’m an awful hostess … 😦

hope y’all have a great thanksgiving holiday. don’t forget to count your blessings … great and small.

love, hugs and blessings to all,

Hey Y’all!

We’re past the half-way point of October and I’ve been debating whether to blog about this or not. Most of you realize that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month … and many of you know that I was diagnosed last year.

Call me superstitious, but I really didn’t want to chime in on the subject. Maybe because I still carry my sword and am fighting my own battle. They say I have to make it 5 years to become a “survivor”.

Well, I’ve made it 15 months since my diagnosis. I survived the surgeries. I survived the chemo (just barely!). I survived the radiation. I survived losing all my hair. And I am surviving the long-term medication that I take to keep the enemy at bay.

So call me what you will. But don’t dare say that I’m not a survivor.

Lest you think I’m a strong woman, I could not, would not have survived these last 15 months without the love, prayers and support of my precious husband, children, sister and dear friends … these and many more I call my prayer warriors. You know who you are.

Ladies, get your yearly mammograms. Please.

Love and hugs to all.

Terry Lee
