hey y’all!

wish i could stay on top of my junking trips and keep them all blogged up for you. seems i’m always running behind. almost wednesday and i’m just now getting to last weekend’s adventure.

the FAGs set off early saturday morning (8:30, that’s early for us). had a semi-agenda of which sales we’d hit and jannetta brought along her trusty GPS (that annoying, bossy, know-it-all woman who tells me where to go (!!) … “turn left then turn left then turn left.” geeeezzz!!)

but she (we call her the “GPS bitch” … or “miss thang” if we’re feeling charitable) did help us out a time or two. other times, she had us going in circles … over and over again. sheesh. you’d think three grown women would know better. “recalculating” she kept saying.

recalculate THIS, miss thang. arghhh.

anyhow, first stop (after the circling) was a little rummage sale put on by the east trimmier community center. normally, i don’t name names. however, i feel it is my duty to do so this time, in the manner of “yardsale bloodbath” (this blog is a HOOT. you should click over there … AFTER you read mine.)

it was a smallish affair, some furniture on the outside, a bbq grill smoking away with brisket (YUMMY) and a sweet old dog running around the grounds. inside there were several tables covered in your assorted yard sale crap. nothing spectacular. two or three women were roaming around, apparently running the show.

i quickly sorted out that i wouldn’t be buying anything, but since jannetta and bonnie were still looking, i tried to amuse myself with the junk. as it happens, jannetta found a little geegaw that she wanted; a wooden piece that she’d use in her laundry room. how much? 75 cents. sold! jannetta paid the lady and we took our leave.

we were seriously considering buying some of that yummy-smelling brisket, but as we were walking down the front steps to leave, one of the women inside came running after us.

“excuse me! did you PAY for that item?!” she yelled at jannetta.

oh. my. gawd. she did NOT just ask that question.

jannetta replied, “yes i did. i’m not a thief!”

by the time i processed the situation (my brain is often foggy and cob-webbed), it was over. but i turned around and said, “how insulting!”

geez. great comeback. of course, after the fact we thought of all manner of things we could have said. or done. but you know what they say about hindsight. 20/20 blahblahblah something.

so we didn’t get any brisket. but we did get an apology from a DIFFERENT lady. she was working the sale and told us she was sorry for how we were treated. she had overheard it all. it helped, but our feathers were pretty much ruffled by then. being accused of stealing (ANYthing, much less something at a yard sale for 75 cents) really is … well … insulting.

they obviously did not realize with whom they were dealing: the FAGs. yard sale aficionados, veterans of the junk wars. we have seen it all, bought it all, sold it all, lived it all. we have no desire or need to steal a 75 cent laundry sign.

having said that, i am happy to have shared our experience at the EAST TRIMMIER COMMUNITY CENTER in KILLEEN, TEXAS with all my blogland buddies.

don’t. mess. with. the. FAGs.

okay, on a positive note, as we were leaving said sale, we saw the funniest sight. my bad, my very bad for not having my camera in tow. just across the little country highway (a very small two-lane job) there were four cows, all lined up in a row, as if they were watching the sale. but they were smelling and watching the bbq grill, smoking away with the delicious smell of … their brother? cousin? friend?! yikes! it was sooo funny. a priceless picture. and i missed it. damn camera-less FAG that i am.

we made the yard sale rounds that morning … from east trimmier to belton lake to belton proper. met a few v. nice folks and found even more treasures/bargains. oddly enough, i didn’t buy all that much. usually my junk takes up most of the space in my trunk. this time bonnie and jannetta found more than i did.

whatever. it’s not the junk that counts. it’s the fun and fellowship of friends.

and getting even.

love and hugs to all,
terry lee

the yard sale pics are scarce so i added some random things around my house … enjoy!

hey y’all!

rather quiet lately on the junking front. stayed home this past weekend to recover from trade days (see previous blog) and did nothing but rest and enjoy some time with my hubby. admittedly, i was sorely tempted to sneak out to a yard sale or two. i even checked craigslist and the local classifieds a couple of times (okay, maybe more like 6 or 8 times).

but alas and alack, i did NOT junk (a moment of silence).

we addicts (and you know who you are) have a difficult time saying no to a yard sale or estate sale or a good flea market. there’s always the possibility of missing that perfect treasure at a perfect price. a treasure AND a bargain?! v. damn difficult to pass up.

but i needed to rest last weekend. i needed to rest my body, my mind, my soul and of course, my wallet. and i’m glad i did. i rediscovered my patio and the gorgeous spring colors blooming all around me. i watched the birds eating from the new feeders i put out (funny how they fight each other for that birdseed … like it’s steak or something).

i even rediscovered some old junk (and not-so-old junk) that i’ve been meaning to repurpose, re-do, re-create into something lovely, charming and useful. with any luck. more on that in future blogs.

anyways, i took some pics for you … in an attempt to capture the colors and beauty of my potted flowers, newly blooming rose bushes (LOVE my roses!) and other plants around my patio and porch. i hope you enjoy them as much as i do … and that you’ll consider slowing down for just a while.

and smell. the. roses.

trade days

hey y’all!

the FAGs have returned from fredericksburg’s trade days and i’m just guessing, but i bet frederick and his little burg will not soon forget the FAGs. when we hit a town, we HIT it HARD.

okay, sometimes harder than others. i’ll admit to some shananigans here and there across texas but i must say we (the FAGs) were rather docile this weekend. it might’ve been the rain on saturday. the cooler temps. the swampy, muddy muckiness that we had to traipse through to get to the vendors/barns. i don’t know. but in that true FAG spirit, we persevered. can’t keep US away from The Junk Hunt … nor rain or sleet or snow, blahblahdiddyblah blah.

it seems The Head FAG (moi) was the only one wearing sensible footwear (my skechers running shoes … not that i EVER run … with lots of arch and heel support) for that kind of slogging and slopping about.

FAG #2 (let’s call her Bonnie for laughs) wore FLIP FLOPS. cute. v. v. cute. pink, even!! and cute pink toenails to match!! on ANY other day, she would’ve been stylin’. well, she was stylin’ … but after smushing her way through the mucky field of ankle-deep muck, she wasn’t feeling so stylish after all. bless her heart.

FAG #3 (jannetta, by default) wore her funky (but stylish!) TOE sock shoe thingies. i don’t know what they’re called. but they’re not toe socks. they actually have a rubber sole on them. they just look like toe socks. she was pretty mucked up too, as it happens.

now, having said all that, we didn’t let footwear (or lack thereof) nor the rain, nor the v. cool, breezy weather keep us from FAGGing away at trade days.

the vendors were marking things down because of the rain. “rainy day specials!” some of them called it. i’d never been to trade days or anything like it and i was, well, slightly overwhelmed and overstimulated. 6 barns full of junk. acres more of outside vendors (they were rained out on saturday but up and running on sunday). oh my!

by mid-afternoon, my poor old bones (and muscles and joints and every other fiber in my tired old body) were creaking, aching, throbbing, SCREAMING at me and i had to raise the white flag. sorry FAGs. yes, i was the party pooper. ME.

we checked into our hotel and i rested while the others went on their merry way. good! y’all go on, little FAGs and have fun. after a hot shower and popping a pain pill, i crawled into bed and tried to sleep. TRIED being the operative word. seems as if we had some sort of motorcycle gang-like people next door and they were on the noisy side. arghh. do i complain NOW, or LATER?

please don’t misconstrue. i am NOT anti-motorcycle gangs. honestly. i don’t personally own a hog, or whatever the hell it is they call them, nor do i especially enjoy the *noise* that they make, or the black leather and chains and studs and bandanas that the riders wear, god bless them. it’s just not my cup of tea. however, i DO take issue with noisy people at hotels. even if they’re driving a mini-van … heck, especially if they’re driving a mini-van.

thankfully, as it happens, the motorcycle “gang” quieted down and we didn’t hear or see them until we left our room to check out. they were hanging out next to their cycles, preparing themselves (bandanas? check! mirror-reflective sunglasses? check! ciggies? check! tight-jeaned b!tch? check!) for the day’s adventure.

bonnie and i edged quietly past them, heads down, trying not to stare, while loading up the camry. when we got in the car, we felt safe enough to take a closer look at them. sheesh! they were about our age (grownup hippies) and were very subdued and civilized with their bottles of evian water (which they probably used to chase down their morning blood pressure pill and anti-depressant).

no WONDER they were so quiet last night! they were SLEEPING! so much for my “motorcycle gang” story having an exciting ending … haha.

it was a fun weekend, as it always is when FAGGing. even if we didn’t land in jail (haha) or have a tumble with a gang of hog-riders, we did get lots of treasures … some to take home in my camry, some to store in our hearts forever. wouldn’t trade THAT for anything.

enjoy the pics.

love and hugs,
terry lee

gracie2

hey again y’all,

hate to keep complaining (some of you who know me well, may beg to differ, haha), but this unseasonably warm and muggy weather lately is really putting a damper on my energy levels and enthusiasm to do ANYthing short of taking naps in my dark, air conditioned bedroom.

so last weekend one of my FAGs and i hit the road (the other one went awol on us … okay, she was doing something honorable and noble like walking to raise money for the hope pregnancy center … while the other two of us went schlepping across central texas in search of that PERFECT treasure at all the garage sales, estate sales, church rummage sales, etc.). very selfish, the two of us. out there chasing our dreams and scheming of future jaunts like next weekend’s fredericksburg’s trade days.

but what a BLAST we had. my poor camry hasn’t been that packed in a long time. reminds me of the good old days when FAGGing was in full gear. oh, if you don’t know what FAGGing is and if you’re curious, you can click The Journey is Everything to read all about it. it was our “outting” blog. haha

first stop was an estate sale. i cleaned out an entire bedroom. well, almost. it had the most beautiful PINK ROSE comforter set with matching curtains. for an extra little amount, she threw in the fantastic vintage window w/mirror that was hanging above the bed.

our second stop was a sweet little yard sale run by some v. nice ladies who actually allowed jannetta (the FAG in question) to use their restroom AND write a check for her goods. ohmy. AND their prices were like THE BEST you could hope for.

“oh, 25 cents for this. 10 cents for that.”

that kinda thing. you junkers know what music that is to your ears. i must say, i’d never ever let a yard sale customer use my bathroom. call me not nice, call me anything you want, but i just wouldn’t. nor would i accept a check from someone i didn’t know. very well. but these ladies were better women than i am and they restored (somewhat) some lost faith in womankind.

we hit lots more sales, including the salado flea market thingy where we actually saw belly dancers perform (whaa?!), a church rummage sale where nothing was priced … they only accepted donations at YOUR discretion (not my cup of meat, i prefer to be told what it costs … otherwise i feel guilty because i’m a neurotic middle child) and many other yard sales. we were soooooo hot and tired and sweaty by lunch time.

and speaking of LUNCH, we backtracked a bit in order to eat in salado. jannetta wanted me to try out a quaint little place called adelea’s (i thought it was pronounced “uh-deal-yuhs”. but NO. wrong again, princess smart-ass. you say it “add-uh-leez”. emPHAsis on the first syLLAble.)

her younger cousin michael is the chef there and so we made a big to-do about knowing the chef and asking for him. he recently graduated from a wonderful culinary school in austin. he was v. kind and gracious and even gave me a sample of his chicken and dumplings (my all time fave comfort food). i loved them, but it was so dang hot i just didn’t have the stomach to eat something warm.

but the deli sandwich was delish and the home made pecan pie with chocolate drizzled over it was TO. DIE. FOR. honestly. i thought i’d died and gone to pecan heaven. michael said they get their pecans from a local vendor in salado. locally grown, locally baked, locally eaten, by local FAGs. us. yum.

okay, i have digressed waaaaay more than usual. what i WANTED to write about was a sweet little girl named gracie. she was the daughter of the yard sale lady who had the great prices and let jannetta use her restroom. while i was perusing her mama’s merchandise, she decided to follow me from table to table. she’d hide under something, then spring up and surprise me with a “Boo!”

this went on the entire time we were there. what a darling. probably about 5 years old. not sure why she latched onto me … must be my pied piper charms. haha. when we were loading up the car, she walked over and handed me a little flower. okay, honestly, it was a weed. picked from her front yard. but to me it was the most beautiful flower in the world. after i thanked her demonstratively (my mama didn’t raise no ingrate), i asked what her name was. she said, “gracie.”

“well of course it is. what else would it be?” i said to her. and i meant it. her mom and aunt were v. gracious to us and little gracie was nothing but a sweetheart, providing me with joy and amusement during our entire visit. you can’t put a price on that.

lord almighty. my word count is now officially 860. sheesh. and i didn’t even get to HALF of what i wanted to share with you. maybe the pics will fill in some of the blanks. enjoy!

love and hugs to all,
terry lee

welcome to my garden

hey y’all,

lazy. i must be lazy. i thought it was the heat. even the humidity. possibly my blood pressure? my thyroid?? that’s always a likely culprit. OR … i could blame it on the cancer treatments (some might call that playing the “cancer card”).

but no, it’s laziness. i confess it to you, my dear readers. all 4 of you. i just can’t seem to get myself in gear lately. or perhaps i should say i’m stuck in one gear: neutral. or is that even a gear?

okay, enough whining! i just had my 3 month oncology checkup and all is well. yea! also, i’m about to reach another milestone in this journey of survival: at the end of may, it’ll be two years since my cancer diagnosis. YEA again! thanks to each one of you for your prayers, good thoughts, words of encouragment and support. i wouldn’t be here today without you and your faithfulness.

after every good 3 month checkup, it feels as if i’ve been given a gift. another three months! which isn’t a bad thing for someone who’s learning to live ONE DAY at a time. three months sounds like a LONG time to me.

speaking of living … and having faith in the future, this is the first time in over a decade that i’ve actually planted something. i call it a garden, but it’s just barely. a garden, that is.

if you’ve done your homework, you know that we recently filled in our backyard inground pool (if not, back up and read my blog about it). it was a nasty affair, the pool and filling it in, so it seemed apropos to use that area for The Garden.

at this point, it has a little straggly apple tree (shades of charlie brown’s cmas tree … but sweet and sentimental and represents the ONE life that ben and i are making together), 3 rose bushes (significant number, for the three children i bore … and bore … and bore), two crepe myrtles (one for me, one for my sweet hubby) and a GORGEOUS vintage arch/arbor thingy i found in lampasas a couple of weekends ago. what it represents i do not know. maybe the welcoming of family and friends into our life (garden). i fell in love with it as soon as i saw it at crazy nana’s.

lordy me. but this business of planting is a painful proposition. first there’s the shopping (which i do well, unless it’s walmart and/or a payday … arghh), then the lugging of the plants/trees/soil mix/tools/gloves/pots/watering can/plant food/rose food (see?! i told you i shop well!) TO the car, then OUT of the car, then TO the patio/backyard. already i’m pooped and ready for a nap.

THEN you have the actual PLANTING of the plants. gawd-help-us. now, being the OCD middle child that i am, i had all my ducks in a row, as it were. my plants and bushes were lined up on the patio, sorted by color and variety, alphabetized and ready to plant. okay, i’m kidding about the alphabetizing. but truly, i had a PLAN for my garden. okay, so it was only in my head, but it was there: this plant would go here, that plant would go there. so on and so forth. blah blah blah.

i knew that my dear sweet hubby wanted a couple of trees, which was great (because i wanted them too). but i thought we would choose them.

together.

one day, he came home dragging a big pot with a tall stick shooting out from it.

“what is that?” i asked.

“a TREE!” he replies, and continues to drag it through the house, out the back door, straight to the virgin garden area. he grabs the shovel and before i can even speak (and that’s pretty quick) he’s already shoved the shovel into the ground.

whaaa??? what about my plans? my layout for the garden?? is that where the tree is supposed to go?!?! he has absolutely NO concept of my master plan, nor does he seem to care. i quickly weigh my options. is it worth saying something? stopping him, mid-shovel? he was determined and intent on planting that sad little stick of an apple tree.

right there. in that spot.

in the end, i didn’t have it in me to argue. i’d work around that little tree. i took it as a sign that THIS little apple tree would be the beginning of our garden, and as corny and as cheesy as it sounds, it would be a new beginning … the first day of our future. and so i pulled the bag of miracle grow over to the hole and we planted that little tree together.

i hope it survives. we’re watering it, feeding it, loving it (and yes, i’m talking to it every day … i read somewhere that it’s good to talk to plants). maybe one day it’ll surprise us with grand-apples. haha

geez this is getting long. time to stop the insanity. my word count is already 729. i can’t help it. verbosity runs in my family. my mom could never tell the simplest of stories in under an hour. i guess it’s true the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. 🙂 more gardening stories to follow … for now, enjoy the pics. and remember, it’s still a WORK IN PROGRESS!

love and hugs to all,
terry lee

this is an old cracker barrel rocker that i found a few years back at an antique mall. painted it antique white and had been using it inside. i think it looks great on my patio. the mosaic piece next to it was marked way down at 'tuesday morning' because of a small chipped area. lucky me!

hey y’all,

don’t know what came over me (laziness? apathy?? lethargy??? all of the above), but i just couldn’t get it together long enough to blog. IT being what, i do not know. maybe if i knew what IT was, i could find IT and use IT to write a blog.

hmmph.

anyhow, i’m here and going to do my best to stick with IT. sorry. i know how disappointed all my readers (hahahaha) get when they click over to read something clever and witty and funny and intelligent … and then they realize it’s MY blog they’ve clicked on. 😉

so i got sunburned this weekend but it was OH. SO. WORTH. IT. ohmygawd. there IT is! IT IT IT IT!!! i have found IT. it being JUNKING.

worth the sunburn, worth the crowdy areas (never knew the harker heights bank parking lot could hold so many people! and the little ol’ lampasas square … geez!), worth the near heart attack from getting stopped by one of lampasas’ finest for going 45 in a 35 (thank you, officer for giving me a warning and not a ticket … i shall not soon forget that lampasas is a sweet little speed trap), worth the elbows in my back (thank you very much, you crazy woman) from other bargain hunters, worth the hauling of junk around in the heat (and wild texas wind!) and cramming it all into my good ol’ trusty camry (thank GOD the backseat folds down!!), worth traipsing down a bazillion little county roads, farm-to-market roads, highways and byways of texas, chasing yard sale/estate sale signs that probably have blown 5 miles away from where they started …

SUCKING IN DEEP BREATH …

worth the gas money to find that PERFECT treasure, worth getting home at dark, worn out, bones creaking and aching, muscles throbbing from the walking and lifting, head pounding from the sunburn and wind (and having TOO much fun), worth having to haul all the junk OUT of the car and INTO the house or the patio or the backyard, worth having to figure out WTF you’re going to DO with all this crap you’ve dragged home. and most definitely worth IT when you finally rest your head on the pillow that night and dream of all the heavenly pieces you discovered that day … and how little you spent! or maybe to start justifying why you spent so much!

however you look at it, IT is worth it! if you’re reading my blog, you are a lover of junk. or me. haha. so you know what i’m talkin’ about. enjoy the pics. i’ll do my best to describe, explain or otherwise amuse you with the captions.

love and hugs to all,
terry lee

hey y’all!

i love april! not only are the bluebonnets in full bloom, but it’s my birth month and spring is all around us. and probably best of all, yard sales sprout up EVERYwhere! churches, non-profits, individuals, multi-families, estate sales. where to start?? so many treasures to discover, so little time!!!!

anyhow, back at the ranch, i’m doing odd things like painting bowling pins. whatup wit dat?! well, many years ago, i came across a couple of old, very used, discarded bowling pins. i can’t even remember where i found them. they were such an oddity, i couldn’t resist buying them.

i gave them to my kids to put in their rooms (i’m talkin’ about my 26 and 28 year olds, when they were young!). if nothing else, they were a conversation piece. as if kids need conversation pieces … geez.

over the years, i guess they got buried with all the other crap in their closets. the other day when tara was cleaning out her closet (in anticipation of her upcoming leaving o’ the nest), she found her bowling pin and offered it back to me.

well! you can pretty much guess what i did with it. yes, you are correct. i painted that baby a soft pink, dressed her up with a necklace and a vintage hat … and she’s on proud display in my foyer (that’s what i call it, it’s more of a hallway/entryway). i think she’s lovely.

april foolishness, yes, joke, no. pics before and after below.

won’t drivel on today. lots to do. other pics of this and that. mostly of that.

happy april y’all. love and hugs.
